Today's thoughts: I was all set to bail out today. Had to go to the gym to give Chad something. So why then did I go dresssed for a workout - go figure. Confused Maybe bcos I am not a quitter - yes I will stick to that.  The knees have been bugging me all day. Told Chad I cannot do full burpees to start with bcos of my hand so did top end burpees. But after 1st set of 3 rounds - right hand was in pain. So told Chad I cannot do anymore. Was all set to stop. No response except question did you see your physio recently - replied seeing the doc on Monday. By this time saw my 2 mins rest was up - without thinking in automation I got up to start the 2nd set of 3. While running was thinking can you do this - what are you going to substitute the burpees with - maybe situps - by which time I finished the 200m jog. Went in - again in automation did one armed burpees. Now I knew how I was going to finish the workout - also knew it would be slow but I am glad I did not quit half way - very glad I did not bail out. Rather pleased that I finished it in a reasonable time. Chad had wanted it done in 15 mins total - I took 16:40 - oh well - that is a reasonable time.

Today's thoughts: Was at the gym today after 10 days - and this is when I begin to wonder is taking a break a good thing or a bad thing!! I understand the need to rest an injury so that it can heal but not doing any workouts I find sets me back as well. Confused Felt good that I could do full push ups in the warm up except for the last 5 in the 3rd set. Anyway today when I ran the 400m during the warm up my knees were hurting some as was my right hip (all from prev injuries) so decided to row instead of run for the workout although the temptation to run was quite high. While squatting too the knee was hurting some - got worried and infact almost quit after the 1st round then Margaret told me to do it without the squats - that did not seem right - so after stopping for a couple of minutes after the 1st round with the intent to quit - could not bring myself to do that - so went back on the rower for the 2nd round by now it has been about 5 mins into the workout. While rowing the right arm reminded me that it was not 100% and the shoulder and the wrist was hurting so much so that in between I actually rowed with one arm and it was alright except the grip was not comfortable as I was using the regular handle and using one hand so went back to two hands and kept switching between one and two hands till I finshed the 500m - squats again the knees were not being kind to me either - infact they were throwing a tantrum so was leaning to the right and standing up at full extension on my right leg only - when I realised I was compromising the workout - decided to call it a day after 2 rounds and as the time indicates it was not a good one to continue. Oh well - being injured sucks big time. Right now the knee seems  to be fine but the right hand - well that is in a little pain but not bad.


The kids on the other hand I think enjoyed their workout. They worked on some skills.

Thoughts: It was a very hot day to start with. Decided to try and workout every other day this week and see how that works with the knees and hands. So far so good - the knee was hurting some already but it warmed up during the warm up and was fine after - the hands on the other hand was reverse - seemed fine during the warm up and then during the workout started complaining.

I wanted to do all 10 rounds and Chad mentioned doing the workout in 8 minutes. So decided to stay with knee push ups rather than full as I knew that the push ups will slow me down . So when during the warm up round I did it in 30 secs I was confident about doing the 10 rounds in that time frame of 8 mins. In fact the first round of the workout was done in 32 secs and the second round was completed in approx the same time. I mainitained that time for the 1st 4 rounds or so then the hand started to give. Tried to see if I could do one hand push up - no way - fear took over and could not go down - so pushed through and finished it at a slower pace - so when at the 7th round I saw the time as 7:40 something I knew no way I can do 10 rounds in 8 mins and stayed with doing 8 rounds. I am very disappointed that I did not do the 10 rounds as I had planned on  - but sensibility that prevails infrequently with me also knows that doing the 8 rounds with 95# for DL and push ups with a sore knee and even worse hand in 9 minutes is not a bad effort. Oh well if it is not good - all it means that I have room to improve and have to work harder - that is all.

Thoughts: Another hot & sunny day. Mentioned to Chad that I need to do one arm row as cannot use my right hand for repetitive movements. So Chad very kindly searched and found the one arm handle for the rower and fixed it for me. Thank you Chad. Scaled my run as well as my left knee is swollen - and hurts when I bend it too much - not a bad bad pain but a bad enough pain. Been like that for 2 days. Could be bcos I had not done any workout for 10 days and now back into the swing of it -  dont know yet. Chad first asked me to do 750 m row for my workout but he saw me struggling - I mean if I was in the water I would be close to sinking kind of struggling - he lowered the resistance I think it is - to the lowest number and then said that I need do only 500 m - one arm rowing is not easy at all - but I did the 500m in about 2:30 min - dont know if that is good or bad. The run was well …. not easy. I was jogging slowly rather than running. Then the one armed burpees - just before the work out started Chad suggested I do it using the 12″ box or tire but I said I would do it off the floor and I am OK with that - I want to start trying one arm push ups. Did the first round in 7:03 mins and second round in the 7:38 mins for a total time of 18:41 including the 4 min rest. Pleased that I sort of maintained the time - took half a minute more in the 2nd round - will attribute that to the small pause before starting the last 200 m run. Good day all in all.

Thoughts: It is amazing how your mind can control you. Due to injuries I am limited to what I can do and due to the various injuries have been scaling most of my workouts for about 9 months now. It is a long time and seems like it has taken a toll on the way I think too now. Where before I would be eager to workout despite my injuries. Now I seem to lack total self confidence in my abilities to do the workouts. I am afraid to fail. So where before I would look for excuses to go to the gym and do something now I look for excuses not to go. This realisation hit me this morning when I had signed up to go and was looking for reasons not to go. And it seems like this has been going on for a bit now. The demons in the head seem to be getting stronger and it is a battle that I fight each time which I win bcos I do go the gym and do the workout albeit scaled or slow or whatever. And I try to finish it most times. And each time I go and finish the workout I am happy that I finished it no matter the time it took and really even more happy that I went.

I know what I want and need and I also realise that I am not going to get it which is very discouraging but I must now accept it and get out of this hole that I am in and try to work on that lost self confidence and get it back. I know I can do it. I just hope it does not take too long.

Do I still like to workout?? - the answer is absolutely - and the answer to the question Do I still like to workout at CFS?? is without a doubt - the only workout for me is a CFS workout and no other. Enough on this mundane topic and onto the workout today.

Thoughts: The right arm is still quite bad so have to stay with one arm workouts. Did one arm row during warm up and though it is still tough it is easier than when I first started. I was intending to do one arm thrusters with dumb bells working to max - but Ian suggested that we do tgu intead. (Margaret also had a sore shoulder). So started with the 8lbs DB then moved to KB - when the 12 kg KB was hard to do - bcos when getting up had to load the right shoulder with the weight of the body so to spk and that hurt so stopped after 1st one and returned to DBs and worked with those instead. They were OK. The tabata sprint was fun - did not sprint but ran at a fast pace as today was the first time after Feb that I worked out without using the big brace on my left knee. And it was OK. The leg that bothered me during the run was my right shin - shin splints I think. It was a good workout tdy - happy that I did not give in to the temptation to cancel and not go.

Thoughts: It was a wet and gray day. Have not done DB presses for max for a very very long time if at all. So today was interesting. Started quite low with the weight fpr press as was not sure how it would feel. Should have started with heavier DBs. And push presses were heavy towards the end - 35# - but was good. Was not sure if I was leaning.

As I could not do the HSPU - Chad suggested I do something completely different like back extensions or sit ups on the machine (GD Situps??) had not done that in a very very long time either so Chad showed how to - Thank you Chad- so started with 10 back extensions then changed positions and did 4 sets of 10 sit ups and finished with 10 back extensions.

Thoughts: Wow last day in June - half the year gone by already - and was a hot day. Still working scaled workouts. Wish I could do the 400 m runs but the way the left knee is healing I am better of waiting and biding my time. It is getting better - still some swelling and pain but pain is negligible - so the 400 m runs will have to wait. But I have to figure why I am getting shin splints in the right shins - is it bad shoes?? or bad running technique?? or a combination of both??

OHS with DBs is not easy - tried 25# but that hurt the back at the bottom of the squat so Chad said to go lighter and suggested 15# so went with that. Retrospectively though I wish I had at least tried 20# to see how that felt. Used the right hand to balance by stretching it out and that helped. Wanted to do it in less than 10 mins but that was not to be - the running slowed me down. A little disappointed with my performance but happy that I finished it.

Thoughts: What a beautiful day and a fun fun workout. Really enjoyed it and Colleen was awesome. The IT bands on my right leg was really tight and was hurting so foam rolled a bit after the row and felt better. Wanted to do that yesterday too and forgot. Did the warm up and it was OK. The run felt better today - the shins did not hurt as much - so I guess it was the shoe to some extent yesterday - maybe. Went low on the box for the jumps as the knee is still a little sore so did not want to over do what with all the running. The one arm burpees were not so bad - wish I could do one arm push up as well - took a couple of breaks. The ring rows were alright too - had to break them up as well. The thrusters again wish I had gone heavier with the 20# DB instead of 15#. By default just picked 15# on the basis of yesterday's workout. Only after the workout did it strike me that I should have tried 20# - always 20 - 20 hind sight.

Thoughts:  Was hoping that todays wod would not involve running but had a very strong feeling that I would be doing some running as I did not know what the workout what was before I went to the gym - I was not surprised when I saw running on the board - the gut feeling was right. There were three levels to the run wod - 800-600-400, 600-400-200 and 400-200-100 and ofcourse I chose the last one. After having done the run I kind of thought to myself maybe should have tried the 600-400-200 one. But I am glad in a way that I did not bcos today again severe shin splints in the right leg so much so it still hurts when I touch the shins. I dont much care for running but I must admit when I am running I kind of like it and usually am glad that I did it after the run. I did not run super fast but maintained a pace and did not walk or stop so to spk which is good. Also in the last 50 m of the last run I actually sprinted and felt good. I had Darlene and Colleen (Cparty) keeping pace with me and that helped too. The times also reflect that I maintained the pace and I am happy about that.

The finisher was fun. The last round had to break up the sit ups. But happy that I did that in less than 5 mins. The lunges seemed easy after the run.

Thoughts:  Was not sure what the wod tdy would be. Hoping no runs again. Happy to see no runs but yes we had rows instead. At first I thought I would do the 400m row but Ian suggested that I do only 200 as I was doing one arm rows and he said it would be better not to put too much strain on the left arm with the repetitive movement. As I could not do the N-ups and KTE is totally out of the question as I cannot do that even with both my arms in good condition - the substitution was sit ups instead and I chose to do 20. The row was not bad - all four rounds were well under the minute mark between 40 - 45 secs but the situps took the most time. The first 2 rounds did them unbroken - the 3rd round did it in 2 sets of 10 and the last round had to do them in sets of 5. The WOD was good and enjoyed it and the Elvis CD that was playing.

Thoughts: Felt good going to the gym after 3 days. Warm up involved doing 5 sledge hammers on tire and bear crawls - did not do them due to shoulder and arm issues. Also the tendon on the left elbow is beginning to hurt as well. Over working it due to restricted movement of the right arm. Thanks to Dale for helping with the scaling. As thrusters were on the board - I was not sure if I would be able to do then - spoke to Dale who first suggested front squats but as left knee has been gving some trouble last 2 days Dale did not want me to do front squats. So decided instead per Dale to focus on skill today with thrusters and stay very low on weight and do 10 instead of 15. Started with pvc pipe to make sure was not hurting shoulder or arms - felt good - so tried the 22# bar and they felt good - no pain - so after checking with Dale added 5# on each side and did that - felt good - there was a 35# bar on the floor so thought will give that a try and see how that feels and it felt good. In fact felt light and easy so was happy about that. But decided to stop at that point - no point in pushing my luck and risking added injury. Happy that I tried that today and right arm and shoulder feels fine and left elbow feels fine too.

The finisher had pull ups and I am not ready yet or rather my arms are not ready yet for that so Dale suggested that I do ball slams instead with 10# ball. And went very low on weight with DB thrusters as was going to do with both arms. So tried 10# DB with the right hand and it hurt when I snatched it so tried 5# but that was like nothing - too light - tried 8# and they felt fine so stuck with that for the finisher workout. Happy that I got 8 rounds in - wanted to get 10 - was trying very hard to get atleast 9 but could manage only 8. The 1st round was the only one that took exactly 1 minute after that was minute and 15 secs more or less per round except for the last round which I pounded through in about 45 secs racing the clock.


Was nice to see some of the level 2 buddies when I got in.

Thoughts: What a day - wet and gray. But the workout was awesome - loved it - first time doing Barbara and had to scale it. Even the warm up - jump rope was to be 200 but the movement of turning the rope was causing some discomfort at the tendon which is inflamed so stopped after 125. As usual did the one arm row but today took 2 breaks - just did not get into the rhythm. And the one arm burpees are getting easier to do.

So Barbara stopped by for a visit and she wants pull ups and push ups - both of which I cannot do at this time - so Dale suggested to do DB press for pull ups and stick to low number of reps as doing one arm and really dont want to over work that shoulder too and injure it so I stayed low on weight too (12# DB) could have gone with 15# and for push ups I have wanted to try doing one arm push ups - I know I cannot do it off the floor so been wanting to try it on the bar - got the opportunity today - and decreased the number of squats as the knee is stil troubling me - so much so that I have it back on braces. Dale had said that the WOD needs to be done in about 30 mins - did my 5 rounds - modified version in 26:12. I think I am happy with that time. Happy that I was consistent in the times with each round give or take 5 - 10 secs.

Thoughts: Beautiful day. One armed row - did it without stopping and time at 2:35. Want to do the one arm row in less than 2:30. Will keep trying. While doing the agility the right knee was hurting a little - foam rolled the IT bands and that helped.


Presses - decided to go low on weight as did not want to aggravate the shoulders or elbows. Started with 22# and then went up to 35# - felt easy and shoulders were fine too - went up to 45# and that was fine too - went up to 55# and that was good too but decided to stop at that point bcos I was not sure how all this was effecting the injuries and did not want to take any chances. Arms feel fine so I am happy - we shall see what happens when tomorrow comes.


Tabata sit ups!!! After yesterdays workout which had 40 sit ups and 5 rounds of it which adds up to 200 sit ups my abs were sore and tabata sit ups today. Dyan was at the gym getting ready for her workout - asked her to count me out in the tabata and to help me keep moving and she did - THANK YOU DYAN. Dyan said that I should aim for atleast 10. Started strong with 13 and maintained that in the next set too but fell short by 1 in the following set and then fell short again by 1 dropping to 11 at set 4 - picked it up to 13 but could not keep that up and dropped to 11 , 12 and 11 in the last 3 sets. So lowest number was 11- happy that I beat the target of 10 that was set.

Thoughts: Yay finally today I did it - 500m one arm row in 2:25 beat the target of 2:30 - happy about that - tire flips - fun - darn thing was not easy to do but loved it. Back  squats - I think after dead lifts this is my fav lift. Started low on the weight with 85# and progressed slowly. Wanted to hit atleast 135# today as I had done 125# x 4 before and did that - could have gone higher too but did not want to take any chances besides had done 145# x 2 only so slow and steady. Happy that I did do the 135# as that was the aim I went with.

Finisher was not sure if I would be able to do the NUps - gave it a try and the arms felt fine - so did 5 rounds of 20 NUps and 10 situps - 3rd workout in a row that I have had to do situps - my abs are complaining that I am making it work too hard. Unfortunately clock was not on so did not time the finisher.

Wet day but loved the workout.

At long last practice day for the dragon boat race.


And after some nervous excitement was on the boat and trying to figure out what I am supposed to do. Well I have to master my numbers from 1 to 4 - Chris did an awesome job steering and the rest of the crew did awesome with the rowing as well. I have to make sure I yell really loud so all of them can hear me way at the back as well. Was very nervous at first but really enjoyed it. I did not have to any of the hard part - steering or rowing. Looking forward to the next practice on Monday.

Thoughts: When I first saw the workout the intention was to scale the run to 200m but do the rest as listed in the full workout (25 of each exercise and 3 rounds). But the day began with both the right hand and left elbow in pain. The knee was grinding a lot today and causing some discomfort. So keeping that in mind and after the 400 m warm up run decided instead to do 20s of the exercise and still do 3 rounds.

It was a very hot day and I am allergic to the sun in the summer. I cannot handle heat specially when it is so hot. So when we took off for the run I thought I would pace myself but even before I reached the 100m marker my shins on both legs were hurting and I knew this is not going to be a “walk in the park” workout but a killer one for me. And sure enough that is what happened - I had to quit after 2 rounds instead of completing the planned 3 rounds. The squats were fine, pushups were OK - did knee pushups - the grass kept ticking my nose - tried to do full pushups but the knee hurt a lot when I kept my leg straight so had to do knee - the lunges were fine as were the situps. First round was fine but towards the end of the second round I was very nauseous and wanted to puke. I had to dig deep to finish with some motivational words from one of the girls helping me find that depth. I am glad I stopped after the 2 rounds - my right hand was swollen quite a bit and the knees were in some pain - want to be able to continue working out.

After the workout had a wonderful chat with Chris - Thank you Chris for the words of wisdom both on the blog and in person. I thoroughly enjoyed our chat and hope to have more such chats. It helped me put things in perspective. Thank you to Chad and Ian for coming up with the outdoor wod and arranging it. Was awesome to see so many out there today. It was also interesting to see how we were attracting the attention of some of the people walking by. I even saw a couple of guys taking pictures of the guys and girls doing their push ups with the weights on their backs. Laugh

Thoughts: Today I was wondering how I would do the workout or scale it. The right arm is still swollen and the muscle spams have been visiting rather frequently on both arms - they are quite painful to say the least. The knee is also not quite happy with me right now and complains. Hopefully the X-rays taken on Friday will show that all is well with knee. So that is the report on the injuries. The 400m warm up run felt good - although I was jogging rather than running. The rest of the wam up felt fine - except after the 200 m run the shins were hurting so decided not to do the last 400 m run.

Thrusters - stayed low with weight on thrusters - doing one arm really is not going to help now that the left arm also has the tendinitis - so did it with a 35# bar. And as the arms were both in some pain and bcos the right one was swollen decided not to do KTE or NUps in my case and checked with Chad if I could do sit ups instead - he said to do 30-20-10 of the situps and 21-15-9 of the thrusters and he wanted the workout completed in 6 - 7 minutes. So I am very happy that I finished it within that time limit at 5:12. The thursters felt fine - although had to break them up except for the last round - same with the situps. I wonder if I can do Fran in the same time - that is the aim now.

Good Workout - enjoyed myself.

Thoughts: Todays workout Chelsea was not possible due to shoulder/arm  issues so scaled to situps - back extensions and box jumps. It was not meant to be timed but I wanted to see how much time I would take to do that. Margaret who also has a shoulder injury was doing the same workout with me. I thought I would take more time than what I took. I was sure the GHD Sit Ups would be hard but they were not that hard and the box jumps Chad had asked that we do repetetive ones so I tried to do that but could not do it fast had to do them slowly - almost had a face plant once - happy with the time.

But what was really impressive was watching the rest of them do Chelsea and Laurie M was the star of the hour going strong for all 30 minutes - Impressive.


Looking forward to a fun filled evening at the dragon boat practice this evening

Dragon Boat Race Practice


We were one paddler short so stepped in to paddle today - there was confusion at times with the calls for the pace - went too fast a couple of times while trying out the starts and then there were times when no one was in sync - but most of the times we did good - kept the pace and rhythm - worked as a team throughout though. Can we pull it off on Friday and Saturday - I'd say we stand a chance for sure - just have to make sure we are all on the same rhythm when we get going - will work on that on wednesday. Chris did awesome with the steering today. Was nice to see a couple of new faces on the boat today - I was totally soaked on one side and my left arm and shoulder feel ike they weigh a ton. Having said that I must say I thoroughly enjoyed the paddling today.

A big Thank You to Ava and Jamie for bailing the boat for me - I was going to wait and do it but one of the “officials” said that the first 2 paddlers can do it as I was not the drummer today. So girls I am sorry I had to leave you two to do it and Thank You for doing it.
