So, today was Fran. Fran scares me. Not, like gee this is going to be tough, like monster in the closet, snakes and heights scary. This got me thinking a bit about fear and CrossFit and I figured it might make an interesting topic for discussion and get the Forum going. Last weekend on the way back from the cert I listened to a lecture by Tony Blauer. Tony is a self-defense instructor and a big CrossFit guy. The talk was on the psychology of self-defense and a big component of that is fear management. He talks about how if we're afraid of something it can effectively paralyze us, but if we look at that fear a little differently, it becomes a challenge. It can be something as small as sending food back in a restaurant or going skydiving or standing up for yourself. A lot of the things we do in CrossFit can be like this. Think about going for a PR in a back squat. Do you worry about getting stuck at the bottom, not being able to bail out, everyone watching, etc. Or do you approach the bar knowing you did 5lbs less last week, you're smarter and stronger this week so what's an extra 5lbs? One mindset is going to lead you to a PR, the other is going to lead you to a missed attempt. If you're scared, you're screwed. If you're challenged, you've got a shot.


Fran was for like this for me today. This WOD literally had me scared shitless. I was praying Chad would say “just jokes” and change it to Murph. Why?

I hear where you are coming from with this post.  Crossfit has given me a significant kick in the A#&$  to get back to where i used to be physically.  I had given up on my body, due to years of abuse, back problems, etc and let things slide for far too long.  My fear was that there would be nothing left in the tank, that injured joints would refuse to be pushed anymore and i would lose the will to drive the body.

In fact, the opposite has happened.  I have a renewed motivation to push myself and have been energized in everything i do in a day.  That is reason enough to keep coming to the gym and putting in an honest effort - that works for me!

When i was a young soldier we used to motivate each other with a saying:

“You will not go to war the way you wish you were, you will go the way you are today!”

That referred to everything from the knowledge we possessed, the mental attitude we were in and our level of physical fitness.  That saying has been bouncing around in my head the past few weeks and has been a motivating factor for me.  Everyone's “war” is different, but the requirement to be fit and ready is universal.
